harvard university, 1676 at least, the oldest in continuous operation. william and mary college was built a little later, but achieved university status before harvard.
lol, it is a little known fact that Modesto Junior college was actually the first college built in America. The Iriqoi nation of the Sanora regigion founded Modesto Junior College in 1675. They decided to open a junior college because they didn't want to invest the full funds a lagitamate university would cost, for fear of poor attendance. Thus, they founded a junior college to "test the waters"
